The ABS (anti-lock brake system) light is on, your car’s computer has detected a problem and set a code. The code will stay in the computer even if the light goes out.
What are your options?
Your first option is to find a shop and have a brake specialist scan your ABS controller. Your second option is to take your car to the dealer and have a technician interrogate your ABS controller for the code. The code will give you some idea of what is wrong with your Anti-Lock Brakes.
Common Problem with ABS brakes
- The brake pedal goes to the floor
- Spongy brakes pedal
- The brake pedal is hard
- The car pulls to one side or brakes grab
- Brakes chatter or shudder
- Brakes produce noise (squealing, scraping, clicking)
- Brake drag (will not release)
- Brake system warning light stays lit
Depending on the code, your brake system could have air or leak, the pads could be worn out, loose and misaligned. The list of problems is long, and if left alone, your brake system will likely get worse, so it’s important you have the brakes checked by a mechanic as soon as possible.
